From the President’s Desk

I want to start off by thanking all of my fellow volunteers who have given up their personal time for our community. While acknowledging a record number of volunteers for committees, we were able to embark down the path of revitalization and a sense of community. It is through volunteering and effective management that we are able to be successful and happy here in Dominion Station. The Board as well as SFMC greatly appreciates everyone’s involvement for the betterment of our community.

We ended last year having accomplished all of our goals for the year. At a high level, the Board of Directors identified a need for comprehensive contract review, a need for actively empowering volunteers through committee membership and actively engaging in fiscal responsibility for the Corporation.

A quick recap of last years work is as follows:

Committees

  • Creation of the Parking Committee
  • Creation of formal charter for the Newsletter
  • Nomination and placement of Chairs for all committees
  • Expansion of the Web Site www.dshoa.com

Contract reviews

  • New contract with SFMC, with the President, Kathy Simonovich presiding as community manager
  • A new landscaping contract which will save approximately $20,000
  • A new irrigation maintenance contract
  • A new contract for legal council which will save approximately $11,000

Fiscally

  • General community issues
  • Balancing the budget and ensuring fiscal responsibility

A comprehensive review of the infrastructure with a high level road map for revitalization of the common areas including:

  • Tot lot refresh
  • Irrigation system service and maintenance resolutions
  • Erosion study for many of the common areas which currently have issues
  • Updated and delivered home checklist for violations

Working with VDOT and County on:

  • Magnolia Rd issues
  • The Atlantic Blvd. project

For the coming year, the Board has taken the direction of execution on many of the ideas and initiatives which we began last year. This year, I envision that we will see more visual returns on the initiatives. As last year was spent planning for this year as well as un-cluttering the Corporate side of the business, we are ready to begin 2008 with a clear slate on which to deliver quality results for our community.

We all recognize that in the current housing market and economy, the Board needs to be frugal, yet effective with our decisions on initiatives. The Board would like to have as much input as possible before we begin to execute on this year’s projects. As we are all residents of the community, we all share the responsibility to speak up and be heard.

As always, I openly invite everyone to participate in the process of the government of the HOA. Please be aware that, until you have been a part of it, you do not know what you are missing!

I look forward to seeing all of you out and about this spring. If you are like me, you are all ready to get outdoors. I hope everyone has a great day!

Homeowner’s Association Web Site Now Online

By: Berty Damato

The Dominion Station HOA has a web site available for the residents. The community may access several resources on the HOA web site at www.dshoa.com. The site is the result of the Board's desire to communicate with the community and is the place to go for information about Dominion Station.

Residents visiting the site will find the latest news from the Board, information about and amenities available to the community, links to recent local news stories published in the Washington Post, as well as a list of frequently asked questions and answers. Any future HOA events for the community may also be found on the web site.

Additionally, residents are able to find contact information for Service First Management & Consulting as well as email addresses to contact members of the Board of Directors of the HOA.

The Board of Directors is responsible for adopting, amending, and/or repealing the rules and regulations that govern the use and enjoyment of the community property. Would you like to know what those rules are? They are online as well. Policy resolutions are available in the "Rules & Resolutions" section of the site, and may also be downloaded in PDF format.

Do you enjoy working on web sites? Does spending hours staring at a computer appeal to you? Well, why not throw your name into the hat to work on the web site committee? If you are interested in updating, adding to, or working on the HOA web site, feel free to contact us by email at web@dshoa.com.

Neighborhood Watch Update

By: Lisa Eyler

On November 7th, nine residents from Dominion Station (DS) met for the third DS Neighborhood Watch Program (NWP). The meeting was hosted by the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office. Deputy Specialist Jason Leydig described recent crime statistics within our community, efforts to decrease speeding along Magnolia Road, community policing, the Sheriff’s Auxiliary, and holiday safety tips.

The main objective of the NWP is to reduce the incidence of crime by increasing citizens’ awareness of burglary and other neighborhood crime through a continuing information program; making recommendations to assist citizens in making their property more secure; developing a neighborhood action program where neighbors help watch each others property and report suspicious persons and activities to the Sheriff’s Office; and encouraging all citizens to cooperate with law enforcement agencies in reporting crimes.

If you would like to join the NWP and/or receive more information, please contact the NWP Co-Chairs Lisa Eyler at 703-501-2043 or Melissa Fishman at 703-298-4482. If you witness suspicious criminal activity, please report it to the Sheriff’s Department – call 911 if it is an emergency, or call 703-777-1021 if it is not an emergency.
